What Should I Know About Plumbing Before a Bathroom Remodel?

If you are planning new tile, a new shower, or moving the toilet, one of your first questions should be: “What about the plumbing behind the walls?”
There isn’t one remodel that fits every house. In Kalispell and throughout the Flathead Valley, a lot of bathrooms sit on pipe that was installed decades ago. The finishes you can see are only half the job.
That’s because moving a fixture is not the same as replacing one in the same place.
Here are the plumbing pieces that change the project.
1. Aging Pipes
If the house has older plumbing, a remodel is the time to look at those pipes while the walls are already open. Fixing a leak later means opening finished work you just paid for.
You do not have to decide on a full repipe from a photo. We can tell you what we are seeing once we can see it.
2. Moving a Sink, Toilet, or Shower
Leaving a fixture where it is, and putting a new one in its place, is one kind of job. Moving it is another. Drainage needs slope. The system needs to vent. Local code still applies.
If you want the toilet on a different wall, tell us that early. That is one of the most useful things you can say before anyone opens anything.
3. Shutoffs You Can Reach
Adding or upgrading shut-off valves during a remodel means a later repair can turn off one fixture instead of the whole house. It is a small line on the plan that you will care about the next time something drips.
4. Venting
Plumbing vents let air into the drain system so water can move. Poor venting shows up as slow drains, gurgling, and smells. A remodel is when that gets corrected, not after the tile is in.
5. The Fixtures Themselves
Newer toilets, faucets, and showerheads can use less water. That is a finish choice and a plumbing choice. If you already bought the fixtures, we can work with what you have. If you have not, we can talk through what the existing rough-in will actually accept.
Same bathroom. Different house. Different job. One remodel stays on the same footprint. Another moves the shower across the room in a house that was plumbed forty years ago. It is normal for those two projects to be different jobs.
Silco does service and remodel work. Advising on a layout is a separate conversation from building the house.
What should you have ready when you call? You don’t need a finished design. Just tell us what you can:
- What you want to change: same layout, or something moving
- Roughly how old the house is
- Whether the walls are already open
- Photos of the bathroom and, if you have them, the existing shutoffs
